The Uganda National women football team needed to pick up maximum points at the Stade de Kigali in their last game to emerge as the region Women champions but only managed to pick up a 2-2 draw against Ethiopia.
Lillian Mutuuzo opened the scoring for the cranes in the 52 nd minute but her effort was cancelled out by Rwanda’s Anne Marie Ibangarye in the 62 nd minute. Uganda went forward again with a Norah Alupo strike 12 minutes later but couldn’t hold onto the lead conceding an equalizer three minutes to the 90 th minute mark to a Jeanette Mukeshimana goal. The championship victors will be decided between Tanzania and Ethiopia in the tournament’s final game.
The Crested cranes played 4 games managing to win two, 1-0 against the Harambee Starlets, 2-1against Ethiopia, 2-2 against the She-Amavuba, and lost only one game 4-1 against the defending champions Tanzania. A win for Tanzania in their last game will mean they will win the championship with Uganda finishing second in the round -robin table with 7 points.
The Faridah Bulega coached side really put up a good and spirited fight since the side that represented in this tournament was a young and inexperienced group; only six of the players had played at the tournament before.
