The 2018 Under 17 Airtel Rising stars tournament semifinals lived up to the billing keeping football fans in Fort Portal at close attention with the home fans having 3 western based teams at the tournament’s knockout stage despite only witnessing all the games go to penalty shootouts.
To begin with the male’s category, the Buganda team needed to make a comeback against the northern region side to level matters 1-1 in the second half after being down at half time. The game was ultimately decided in penalties with the central region representatives winning (4)-(2). The game was a repeat of the 2016 Airtel rising stars finals in which the Northern region emerged as champions.
Kampala side on the other hand also booked their ticket to the finals after a 7-6 tense penalty shootout that put the crowd at tenterhooks since it had evidently rallied support behind the western region.
Speaking about tomorrow’s final,”….we started with a 1-0 loss to Buganda region which helped us re-organize and we were able to win the subsequent fixtures, we prepared well for the semifinals, talked to the players. So far it has been hard to predict a weak team, the opponents have been competitive enough. Now that we are into the finals, the only thing we have to do is for the players to rest enough, have a good team talk and come up with an offensive game plan… I promise an entertaining display tomorrow…” Kampala head coach Abubaker Sseguya told Sports256.
Meanwhile, the western and Kitara regions will also face off in a western region girls final after managing to win in penalty shootouts 4-2 and 5-4 respectively.
