It was just a matter of time before JKL Lady Dolphins would be announced as the Women’s 2018 National Basketball League champions. The Just Kip Livin lady’s team defeated defending champions UCU Lady Canons 66-63 in a heated game four contest at the Lugogo indoor stadium on Wednesday night to lift their maiden title.
UCU Lady Canons looked as though they would push the playoffs to series 5 with a very impressive and spirited display in 3 successive quarter leads. The Canons took a 5 point advantage by half time.
The third quarter produced little difference as JKL set out to keep themselves in the game with the quarter ending 46-48. However, UCU went out on a self distraction mission in the final moments of the forth quarter when Vilma Achieng fouled Ritah Imanishimwe who later converted 2 free throws to put JKL into a one point lead with 29 seconds to play.
Nicholas Natuhereza’s charges further sailed away 2O seconds later when Muhayimuna found Jamila Nansikombi on the break for a 2 point jump shot with just 9 seconds on the clock.
UCU’s center Vilma Achieng made a game high 22 points and 12 rebounds, connected 10 of 18 on field and 10 of 17 from deep. She was trailed by shooting guard Ritah Imanishimwe at 15 points,3 assists whilst Sarah Ageno(UCU), Zaina Lakwomeri(UCU) and Jamila Nansikombi(JKL) contributed 11 a piece with the latter scoring 13.
JKL Lady Dolphins who won with a clean 4 games sweep(70-64,75-69,56-49 and 66-63)are part of a Just Keep Living Sports project that was tipped off in 2014 by a team of sports fanatics stirred by Gad Eteu, Fedricks Owora and Emmanuel Angwella who run a pair of both men’s and lady’s basketball teams which compete in the National basketball league.
