CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Second leg Result: Vipers Sc 1-0 El Merreikh (Aggregate 2-2) Vipers progress on away goals rule.
Save for Abraham Ndugwa’s 46th minute strike, there was little to admire from a Vipers team that came short of inspiration and urgency through out both periods.
A performance that didn’t differ from the previous displays, with exception of the desirable result. Mexican Javier Martinez could have been faulted for a mind that didn’t reflect logical tactical flexibility.
Against an away side that transitioned with rhythm and pace in attack,Vipers could barely engineer a spell of interplay, something that was shown in calling off Moses Waiswa and Abraham Ndugwa with over 25 minutes to play.
The Venoms, by half-time only had one big chance at goal that fell to Tito Okello who smartly beat his marker for a shot that was deflected for a corner kick.
Substitute Davis Kasirye was blessed with an opportunity to double the lead but the forward put so much power behind the ball at close range.
Speaking at the post match press conference Vipers SC’s head coach Martinez lauded his team’s resilience. “.. there are no weak teams, this is the champions league. We had a strategy to win,and I am happy we won today..”
Vipers will now face off with the winner between Gambia’s Gamtel and Algeria’s CS Constatine in another two legged clash for an entry into the lucrative group stages.
