AFCON U-17: Exit for Uganda after draw with Nigeria

Group A Results:

Uganda 1-1 Nigeria

Tanzania 2-4 Angola

End of road for debutants Uganda as they failed to pick up the desired result against Nigeria’s Eaglets for a place at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Brazil.

As it seemed form the start that it was going to be a tough road for the teenagers at the AFCON under-17,the frustrating feel for Uganda Cubs’ exit is somewhat measurable and conceivable.

The Cubs went into the final game needing, first to take care of their own business-win against Nigeria’s Eaglets-and then hope for a favorable result from the Angola-Tanzania encounter, but neither of that came through.

The Cubs took the initiative against a much fancied Nigerian team thanks to a 69th minute strike by Alou John Kakos albeit the lead only lasted for 4 minutes as the Eaglets responded through Jabaar.

Even with a levelled result,Uganda could have hanged on to the mathematics if Tanzania had picked up a victory, but Angola who had earlier on defeated Uganda in the opener were able to squeeze a 4-2 win from the hosts.

Ultimately,Nigeria(seeking for their third title) progressed to the semifinals alongside Angola and the two will be joined by Cameroon and any from (Guinea,Morocco and Senegal)-who are playing tomorrow- to complete the 4 slots for the African sides that will compete at the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in Brazil later this year.

The road may not have been as long as the Cubs would have dreamt of but the performances seem to be acceptable and conceivable for a side that was only making its debut.
