Uganda’s return to Africa’s biggest football stage was off to a smiling mark as they registered a deserved 2-0 victory against 2 time African champions-DRC.
Uganda had last won at the finals in 1978 when they beat Nigeria in the semi-finals and finished runners-up to hosts Ghana.
In what stands to be a headline result across the football fraternity and if not what could be Uganda’s biggest result at the 2019 AFCON tournament.
Desabre maintained 7 players(Onyango,Wasswa,Juuko,Walusimbi,Aucho,Miya and Azira) that played at the previous tournament with a blend of new faces in Abdu Lumala and Bevis Mugabi.
By and large,The Cranes executed their game plan to the dot,assisted by a rare lack of spark form DRC and a low key intensity,Uganda helped themselves out to register a deserved win.
And it was a 13th minute perfect header by Kaddu after eluding the Leopards’ negligent defenders, he latched on to a corner from the left to open the scoring from eight yards.
Wing forward Emmanuel Okwi doubled the lead from yet another set piece delivered just inside the 18 yards box by Faruk Miya who had a brilliant day.
The Cranes (now at the top of group A) illuminated their chances of progressing out of the group should they pick up an extra point(s) in the remaining 2 games.
Uganda return to action on Wednesday 26th,June against a wounded Zimbabwean team.
