Ethiopia Premier League: Yasser Mugerwa Help Shire Endaselassie Survive The Axe.

Despite being left out of the Uganda Cranes squad that played in this year’s AFCON 2019 in Egypt, Uganda Cranes midfielder Yassar Mugerwa has continued to showcase his abilities and quality helping Premier league side Shire Endaselassie survive relegation in the Ethiopian top tier

The 26 year old creative midfielder who was signed in the mid transfer window from Fasil Ketema to help the club survive, has scored two goals and managed 12 vital assists that enabled the team achieve the target before they even played their last game against his former club Fasil Ketema that was chasing the title

Mugerwa spent one and half years at Fasil Ketema after leaving St George and before the end of the two year contract he decided to join relegation stragglers Shire for a new challenge

When we were signing at Shire, we were tasked with helping the club survive, we knew it was a big challenge which we believed it was attainable and we have done it well, I left Fasil Ketema because of personal reasons but as well we found it in the same situation like Shire and transpired it into a title contender and I believed we could do it at Shire as well

I feel relieved achieving the assigned target, because with interests from other clubs, many accused me leaving Fasil Ketema to a club fighting relegation but I knew this would be great experience having played & won the league before so am happy Mugerwa told Sports256

Mugerwa who penned a one year deal with three other Internationals; two Ghananians, one Ivorian and seven local based players joined Shire when it was second last on the log in 15th place, and the team had only managed a single win, 8 draws and had lost 6 matches in the 15 first round games

Mekelle Kenema won the Ethiopian league title beating Dire Dawa Kenema and Shire helped them hold Fasil Ketema to a 1-1 draw in the last league matches. Mugerwa’s former club Fasil Ketema just needed a win to win the title but couldn’t beat his current employers

Shire finished 13th with 34 points and Fasil disappointingly finished third with 58 points behind Mekelle Kenema and Sidama Coffee with 59 and 58 respectively

When asked about the Uganda Cranes performance in AFCON and his intentions to return to the Cranes fold, he had this to say

Because there is no big difference between African teams, I expected what they boys did in AFCON because of Desabre’s Philosophy, I was among the few people who believed in the former Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre in regards to how he was preparing the team and the drills he took us through when I was summoned so i had belief that we could even win the AFCON according to my previous Facebook post in regards to his Philosophy that we go out challenge and attack teams not to seat bacj and defend as we used to previously

He, however, was uncertain of the exact time, when he was asked about the Cranes return

I can’t guarantee when I will be back to the fold, it will be up to the coaches because if its according to the statistics I would say am sure I will be back just after AFCON but because I am not certain of what criteria is used to summon players, i don’t know when but what I can tell Ugandans is am always ready and this has been my best season in terms of peformance

His pleasing performance has attracted a couple of big name clubs in the Ethiopia league but sources reveal he is yet is to make a decision either to sign an improved contract at Shire or join another Club
