Uganda Hippos played to a 1-1 draw against Eritrea in the opening match of the CECAFA U-20 boys challenge Cup but head coach Morley Byekwaso is hopeful his side will pick up as the tournament progresses.
I must say the boys played well and we created many chances though we didn’t use them, I think the boys are still nervous being our first match but they will pick up in our next game we try to achieve our target.
Byekwaso admits it wasn’t a good start for the host nation but believes in the quality he has.
We take the blame as coaching staff for the fair result because we wanted to win, but we believe we have enough quality in the team and no doubt our target is to win the title. We didn’t miss Bright Anukani for this particular match who is with the senior national team but he will be a good addition when he returns. But for now we are going to go back to work on a few things more so concentration in the last third.
Proline forward Ivan Bogere scored for Uganda in the 37th minute and Mewael Teafai equalised in the 57th minute.
Sudan lead the group with three points after thumping Djibouti 4-0, Uganda and Eritrea with a point each and Djibouti last yet to get a point.
Uganda returns to action on Monday against wounded Djibouti at 4pm and Sudan will take on Eritrea in the earlier fixture at 1:30 pm.
