Dozens of medal winners from the recently concluded Tokyo Olympic Games were in action at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Hayward Field Eugene for the Prefontaine Classic.
Uganda’s Olympic medalist, Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, and Jacob Kiplimo were among the Five Ugandans who took part in the prestigious Prefontaine classic.
All three medallists from the men’s 5000m were all in action at the wanda diamond league action in Eugenee as Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, Canada’s Moh Ahmed and USA’s Paul Chelimo clashed over two miles.
Uganda’s olympic champion Joshua did not disapoint as he outpaced rival Ethiopian Selemon Barega clocking at the time of 8:09.55, and American Paul Chelimo, the Olympic 5000m bronze medallist beat Uganda’s 10000m Olympic bronze medalist Jacob Kiplimo for third place.
Women 3000M steeplechase olympic champion Peruth Chemutai came 7th in the womens category that was won by kenyan Norah Jeruto with a personal best time of 8:53.65.
Winnie Nanyondo (4:00.72 ) was fourth as Faith Kipyegon (3:53.23) brilliantly eased to victory in the Women’s 1500m race in a meeting Record time.
Halimah Nakaayi who clocked a time of 1:58.78 came sixth in a women’s 800m race won by American Athing Mu.
Biggest moments at eugene was when Double Olympic 100 metres champion Elaine Thompson-Herah ran a Jamaican and Diamond League record of 10.54sec in Eugene to defeat a field including the two compatriots who joined her on the Tokyo 2020 podium and home sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson.
